Four weeks of non-stop football
Tomorrow Euro 2022 will kick off. Aside from all the inevitable hand wringing about how many people know about the competition - it has sold double the number of tickets than the 2017 one did, and two-thirds of the tickets available, so some people clearly know about it - and clichéd pieces on players being ‘inspirational’, there is about to be some very good football taking place in England over the next four weeks.
Part of what feels so exciting about Euro 2022 is how open the competition is. There are genuinely five or six teams who could win it. Opta’s model is very keen on England and France. Recent tournament football points to Sweden. Historical precedent suggests we should not write Germany off. At this point, I have no real clue what is going to happen. But the size of the tournament means we should get some better ideas quite quickly. Germany face Denmark, Sweden play The Netherlands, and France meet Italy all within the first 5 games.
Given how rapidly everything could develop, I’m going to be using this newsletter as a space to write about Euro 2022 every day. I will be aiming to keep things short and sweet - 500 words or so on the previous day’s action to drop into your inboxes in the morning. This could be incredibly foolish or a lot of fun - I’m hoping it will be a bit of both.
Expect: a quick overview of what happened the night before, some kind of analysis on what’s going on, and whatever other rambling thoughts I have.
So subscribe and get my early morning thoughts emailed to you every day for the next four weeks. Lovely stuff.
